About 45 minutes before Thursday’s wild 4-3 victory over the
Sabres, Panthers coach Pete DeBoer was asked if still had
confidence in Chris Higgins’ scoring skills after a prolonged
slump made longer by his inability to finish off two point-blank
opportunities the night before in a loss to the Penguins.
“I like the way he’s playing,” DeBoer said then.
“The challenge for him is to keep his job on the first line
and keep playing those kind of minutes. As long as he’s
creating chances, that’s all you can ask.
“You can’t coach guys to finish. When I get
concerned about players, it’s when they are not creating
chances. He’s done it before. He’s been a 20-goal
scorer in the past.”
