UNIONDALE, N.Y. — When Panthers left wing Chris Higgins is asked for an autograph he feels a tad uncomfortable, simply because when he thinks of heroes to admire, New York City police officers and firemen like his father, Bobby, and brother, Kevin, come to mind first, not professional athletes.

"I'm considered the [wimp] in the family,'' said Higgins, 27, in his first season with the Panthers after five seasons in Montreal, and part of another with the Rangers and Flames.

"They put their lives on the line every day. There's a seriousness to playing hockey but you're not doing it to help somebody. Every time they go to work could be their last. It puts things in perspective for me, just playing a game entertaining people makes you feel like your job is insignificant some times."
