CORAL SPRINGS — For the first three full seasons of his NHL career, life was good for Chris Higgins. The native Long Islander was taken 14th overall by his favorite team, the Montreal Canadiens, and he proceeded to notch three consecutive seasons of 20 or more goals.
Then the injury bug bit hard and his production slipped to 12 in the 2008-09 season, which got him traded to the New York Rangers. Despite taking 137 shots in 55 games, Higgins scored only six goals and was shipped to Calgary.
After the season, Higgins decided the revamping Panthers afforded him the best opportunity for ice time, so he signed a one-year deal worth $1.6 million. The 6-foot left winger expects to bounce back and be a lunch-pail guy, scoring ugly on deflections and rebounds while hanging around the crease — an area that seemed off limits to Panthers forwards last season.
