Whale of a Job

NEW HAVEN — In 1958, it was a revolutionary design by one of
the era’s hottest architects — Eero Saarinen, a
Yale-trained designer who believed that buildings should be works
of art as well as functional.
Today, the David S. Ingalls Rink at Yale University remains a
one-of-a-kind-facility with its history as an iconic structure
reaffirmed after a $25 million facelift. The hockey rink, restored
to some of the specifications that had been lost since it opened in
1958, was rededicated in a ceremony there Saturday with Yale
President Richard C. Levin leading the celebration.
Should someone who has not seen the building since it opened,
revisit, they will notice that it has seemingly retained its
pristine look, not knowing that, like a NORAD bunker, the best is
below.
