Yale goalie Alec Richards is one of just four seniors on
the Bulldogs, this weekend’s top seed at the ECAC Hockey
championship weekend after winning the regular season and sweeping
Brown in a quarterfinal series.
He was thrust into the spotlight right away. Richards started 26
games as a freshman (8-15-3, 3.02 GAA, .912 sv. pct.)and shared
team Rookie of the Year honors with Michael Karwoski. Among his
starts in his freshman year was a five-overtime classic against
Union in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. He made 57 saves that night as
Yale defeated the Dutchmen.
He again started the majority of games his sophomore season, the
team’s first under the direction of Keith Allain, and won
nine games that year. After just 11 appearances and seven starts as
a junior, Richards became the team’s number-one option in net
again in his senior year. The Robbinsdale, Minn. native boasts a
17-4-1 record in 21 starts, a 2.02 goals-against average and a .923
save percentage. He was named as the All-ECAC Hockey Third Team
Goaltender when the league announced its end-of-season awards on
Tuesday morning.
