If Jeff Hamilton needs any inspiration to make the most of his
time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he will keep a former teammate
in mind.
After setting school scoring records at Yale University, Hamilton
was invited to the training camp of the New York Rangers. He was in
Manhattan when the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred, but
he was sent packing by the club because he wasn't in NHL
condition.
His agent found him a job in Finland, playing for Karpat in front
of a pudgy but effective goalie named Tim Thomas. A few seasons
later, at age 31, Thomas finally found steady work in the NHL with
the Boston Bruins and now is considered among the game's elite.
