Christopher Higgins: Live from Bern
The following blog, written by former Yale standout Chris Higgins, appeared May 5 on the Montreal Canadiens Web site.
I’ve played in three games so far. We beat France and lost
to Russia and then the Swiss in OT. It was fun to play against
Yannick Weber since we roomed together toward the end of the season
and really got along great. I’ve been playing on a line
mostly with Joe Pavelski of the Sharks and Ryan Shannon of the
Senators. I’ve played on teams with Shanny since I was 11
years old so it’s a lot of fun for us to be reunited on the
same line for the US.
I was very anxious to play my first game. I had to sit and watch
two games in the preliminary round due to roster rules, so that was
basically torture. Finally getting into the lineup and playing
alongside my teammates was a big thrill. I was a bit worried the
summer rust had begun to set in because I hadn’t played since
the last game against the Bruins. The body was shocked back into
game shape pretty quickly, though I think my legs wanted to be on a
beach somewhere.
If you’ve seen highlights or pictures from the games,
you’ve probably noticed I’m wearing number 18. I wore
it when I played at Yale and when I played at the two World Junior
tourneys. I originally asked for 18 when I joined the Habs but we
all know why I didn’t get it. Side note - does anyone
remember me wearing number 88 for my first two NHL games? Probably
not, because by the end of those two games I was sitting on my
gloves because my butt hurt so much (I played maybe three and a
half minutes). What a bad number that was!
