Going Pro, From the Bulldogs to the IceHogs

The following article featuring Yale defenseman Brennan Turner appeared in the March 28 issue of the Yale Herald.

BY NATASHA SARIN

Brennan Turner, PC '09, is leaving the Yale bubble this year. In a big way.

Turner was recently signed to an "amateur tryout" contract with the Rockford IceHogs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, and has chosen to forgo his senior season at Yale. He has already left campus.

Though Turner's decision may seem sudden, his intention to pursue hockey professionally has been evident for quite some time. Turner was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2005, before his collegiate career even began. However, Turner is far from the first Bulldog to be drafted by a professional club; in fact, current forwards Patrick Brosnihan, TD '09, and Will Engasser, CC '08, were both drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, and defenseman Robert Page, CC '08, has been drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Being drafted by an NHL team, however, does not necessarily mean that a player will sign a professional contract. This fact is the reason why Turner's recent contract has created so much excitement amongst teammates and Yale hockey fans alike.
