Union Honors Accomplishments of Four Dutchmen

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Mat Bodie, Stephane Boileau, Keith Kinkaid and Brock Matheson were among a group of 105 seniors recognized for their achievements as part of the 2011 Union Athletics Senior Appreciation Dinner Thursday at College Park.

Bodie received the Freshman Athletic Prize; Boileau the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award; Kinkaid the Harold R. Moore Sophomore Athletic Prize; and Matheson the William B. Jaffe '26 Award.

It was another memorable athletic season for Union Athletics, featuring 146 all-academic league selections (including Liberty League and ECAC Hockey), 12 All-Americans, four Academic All-District stars, 65 league all-stars, eight league Players of the Year, two league Coaching Staffs of the Year and a national coach of the year. In addition, Union had three NCAA playoff teams, four performers in national all star games, and a student-athlete of the year recipient.

Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin '93 provided his comments of remarkable accomplishments for the year as well as his thoughts about the students with their work in the community and classroom. 

The first award of the evening was presented to Dennis Flavin. Flavin is retiring from Union after 27 years with the college, including 23 working as the zamboni driver along with his other duties at Messa Rink. Flavin received the Athletics Appreciation Award.

Boileau and Matheson were among a group of seven seniors who spoke on behalf of their classmates. 

 

 

 

 

 

SENIOR SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Stephane Boileau

~ Carries a 3.89 GPA in Neuroscience (pre-med) and Economics
 ~ ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year (Union's third in five seasons)
 ~ One of 10 national finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior Class Award
 ~ Nominee for 2011 Hockey Humanitarian Award
 ~ Raised money for a single mother and her five children, and delivered clothes and gifts to the family prior to Christmas

 

 

 

 

 

WILLIAM B. JAFFE '26 AWARD

Brock Matheson 

~ ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Defenseman, the first Union student-athlete to win that award outright

~ ECAC Hockey All Star

~ Captain of Union's first ever NCAA Division I playoff participant and Cleary Cup Champions (for regular season title)

~ Led the nation's second ranked defense that allowed the fewest goals in school history (2.10 avg.).

~ Finished tied for second in the league with a plus/minus rating of +27

  

 

 

HAROLD R. MOORE SOPHOMORE ATHLETIC PRIZE

Keith Kinkaid 

~ AHCA First Team All-American goaltender, Union's second ever and first since 1997

~ Ken Dryden Award recipient for the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year

~ Set a school record with a 1.99 goals against average, which ranked 4th in NCAA Div. I

~ Led ECAC Hockey with a 1.90 goals against average in league play

~ Set a school record with 25 goaltender victories, and won 17 in league games

~ Finalist for ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year

~ Led ECAC Hockey with a plus/minus rating of +30

~ Broke Union's season point record for a defenseman and assist record for a defenseman

~ Second in ECAC Hockey in points for a defenseman
