SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union men's and women's ice
hockey teams have joined ECAC Hockey in a partnership with Goals
For Good, a charitable initiative designed to give back to the
communities that have supported and been home to the teams of the
conference. As part of the Goals for Good project, the
captains of each ECAC Hockey school have chosen a partnership
with a charity in close relation to the team, school, and/or
community.
Union Hockey is partnering with the V Foundation in honor of
Kristen Shinebarger. Thankfully, Kristen has completed her
treatments for her battle with Ewing's Sarcoma and is doing very
well. The men's and women's team wanted to continue to honor her
courageous battle by continuing to support cancer research.
The V Foundation was established in 1993 by ESPN and Jim Valvano.
Jim, a former NC State Basketball Coach, saw the need for new
advances in cancer research during his battle with metastatic
cancer. Sadly, Jim passed away in 1993, but the foundation that he
helped create is still fighting to find cures for cancer. Through
Goals For Good, Union College hopes to help continue The V
Foundation's support of cancer research.
Goals For Good will be a charitable competition, as fans of
each program are asked to pledge a dollar amount to the team's
charity per goal or win. with various bonuses for the top
performing teams and their communities, Goals For Good hopes to
bring an increased amount of aid and awareness to our charities
this season.
