SCHENECTADY -- The brackets say that top-seeded Union College is hosting the No. 12 seed (last-place) Colgate University in Game 1 of a best-of-3 ECAC hockey quarterfinal series Friday night at Messa Rink.

Reality says that in playoffs, seeds don't mean much other than home-ice advantage, especially in the ECAC where three of four lower-seeded teams pulled off opening-round upsets last weekend to advance to the second round.

For Union (25-7-4, 17-3-2), ranked fourth in the nation and winners of the league's regular-season championship, the weekend series with Colgate (9-25-3, 4-15-3) represents a chance to advance to the ECAC semifinals next weekend in Atlantic City.
