Bennett's Long Road to Union

Hockey has taken Rick Bennett from a frozen pond near his backyard to Madison Square Garden -- and to many, many places in between. He has played for an obscure minor-league team in the Deep South, made a one-year stop in the Midwest and coached at two colleges in the Northeast. He even played in a now-defunct roller-hockey league in New Jersey and Orlando.
So where is the fork in this winding road of a hockey career? Try the Providence College locker room one afternoon more than 20 years ago, while Bennett still was a player.
That day an NHL veteran by the name of Paul Cavallini visited the team. Cavallini regaled Bennett and his teammates with tales of his professional hockey life, but for Bennett, there was something about this visit as inspiring as Cavallini's words.
