Union Extends Leaman's Contract
SCHENECTADY, NY - Union College extended the contract of men’s ice hockey coach Nate Leaman through the 2016-17 season, the school has announced.
“I’m very happy about being a part of this program for a long time,” Leaman said. “Along with the school’s commitment to me, the school is making the commitment to our program to help us to continue to succeed. I’d like to thank President Stephen Ainlay and athletic director Jim McLaughlin. Their continued support of the program is tremendous and greatly appreciated.”
Leaman set a program record for wins last season (21), and led the Dutchmen to their first appearance in the ECAC Hockey Championship Game. He led the Dutchmen to a winning home record for the fifth consecutive season and also secured home ice in the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons. Leaman’s ’09-10 squad produced 134 goals, which is the highest total in program history. Under Leaman’s direction, Mario Valery-Trabucco broke the school’s single season record with 45 points and was selected Second Team All-ECAC Hockey. Mike Schreiber, who will play professionally in 2010-11, was named First Team All-ECAC Hockey.
Union had just as much success off the ice as Stephane Boileau was named the 2010 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Second Team. Sixteen student-athletes were named to the conference’s all-academic team, bringing the total of all academic selections to 63 during his tenure.
“Nate’s been nothing short of remarkable,”
McLaughlin said. “The progress that has been made during his
tenure has been outstanding. It’s not only the
accomplishments on the ice, from the first playoff series win to
advancing to the championship to runners-up in the ECAC, which is a
very difficult league. It’s been what’s going on off
the ice, from his students’ academic performance and their
community service. I couldn’t be more pleased with his
leadership and what he has done here.
The Dutchmen will open their season at home on Oct. 8 at 7:00
p.m., when they take on Sacred Heart University at Messa Rink.
