SCHENECTADY -- Long before he cultivated an underdog hockey program at Union, Nate Leaman was an unlikely hockey player.

A soccer star as a child, Leaman didn't know how to ice skate when he decided to change sports and try out for the junior varsity hockey team at his Centerville, Ohio, high school. He taught himself.

"I had just gotten burnt out on soccer a little bit," Leaman said. "I was looking for something different. For whatever reason, hockey was right there. Looking back, I was fortunate my school happened to have a hockey team."
