Varady to Guide U.S. Under-18 Selects

USA Hockey revealed Wednesday that former Union standout Jay Varady has been named to the coaching staff for USA Hockey’s U-18 Select Team that will compete at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from August 9-14 in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.  Varady will serve as an Assistant Coach under Head Coach Tim Army.

Varady, 33, won a gold medal with USA Hockey at the 2010 World Junior Championships, where he served as a Video Coordinator.  He also has experience coaching at USA Hockey’s 2008 National Junior Evaluation Camp.
“It’s always an honor to represent your country, and we’re looking forward to heading over there for this competitive tournament,” Varady said.
The Cahokia, IL native played three seasons for the Dutchmen prior to an injury that relocated him to the bench, where he served as a volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2000-01 season.

Varady currently serve as associate head coach with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League.

The United States won the gold medal at the tournament in 2003, and finished as silver medalists six times, most recently as 2006.  The tournament honors the late Ivan Hlinka, a former Czechoslovakian national team player and coach.
