Key Statistics: Welsh was a contributing offensive player as a freshman and chipped in 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points. Four of his goals came on the power play and he had three game-winning goals. Welsh was whistled for 17 penalties for 45 minutes.
What He Does: Welsh has a big frame and uses his 6-foot-3 body to get involved in the offensive zone. His strongest asset is his quick release when shooting the puck, and it led to 10 goals. That is a respectable total for a freshman and a number that will likely grow as he adapts and grows over the next three years. Welsh played primarily on the wing last season, but has a skill set and responsibility that would allow him to play center. Union will try him in that role this year.
The Bigger Picture: Union is coming off of one of the best seasons in program history, a 21-win campaign that saw the Dutchmen advance to the ECAC Hockey championship game in Albany. Though Union fell short of the NCAA Tournament, that is a legitimate expectation for the Dutchmen in the coming seasons. Last year’s two leading scorers – Mario Valery-Trabucco (23-22–45) and Jason Walters (16-24–40) – graduated and Welsh will be counted on to provide even more offensive punch this year.
