SCHENECTADY — Picked sixth in the coaches' preseason poll,
the Union men's hockey team has only occasionally this season been
in contention for a first-round bye in the ECAC playoffs. Now the
Dutchmen need to perform well this weekend just to get a home
berth.
"Right now we're just looking to take care of business this
weekend," said senior captain Matt Cook, whose team enters tied for
eighth place and the final home berth with Clarkson. "Our first
priority is getting home-ice advantage for the playoffs in the
first round — I think it's going to be the first round at
this point."
With a weekend sweep the Dutchmen (8-10-2, 18 points) would finish
with 22 points, but Dartmouth and St. Lawrence, which are tied for
fourth place, both already have that many and the top three spots
have been clinched in the standings by Yale, Princeton and Cornell.
As fate would have it, Union hosts Clarkson (7-9-4, 18 points) in
the season finale on Saturday.
