Union men’s team defenseman Mike Wakita and Dutchwomen
coach Claudia Asano lost some hair Wednesday, but it was all for a
great cause.
As part of ECAC Hockey’s Pink at the Rink program to help
fight cancer, Wakita and Asano had their long hair cut in the
men’s locker room at Messa Rink. The hair was donated to
Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which turns it into wigs. PBL donates
the wigs to the American Cancer Society, which then provides
them free of charge to women in the community who have undergone
cancer treatment.
Wakita started letting his hair grow long in the summer of 2007.
He was doing it in memory of Michelle Oomn, who died from
complications of breast cancer just over two years ago. Wakita
lived with Michelle and her husband, Duane, when he played
Junior “B” hockey for the Campbell River (British
Columbia) Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior League.
