SCHENECTADY — One year from now, Union College hockey
players won’t have to hear that old refrain, “Union has
never won a playoff series” attached to their first-round
ECAC Hockey matchup.
The Dutchmen took care of that void in impressive fashion last
weekend, sweeping their best-of-three series over Clarkson for
their first Division I playoff series victory in their 10th
try.
After a couple of days to reflect on what has to be considered a
milestone in the program’s history, several Dutchmen kept the
huge accomplishment in perspective. After all, they had expected to
win, even if the sweep of 9th-seeded Clarkson – and
outscoring the Golden Knights by a combined 12-5 – may have
been a bit surprising. Moreover, their focused now on a chance to
beat defending champion and third-seeded Princeton in a
quarterfinal series this weekend, with a berth in the ECAC Hockey
championships at the Times Union Center March 20-22.
