Blog: On the Ice with Randy Dagenais
The following blog, written by former Union standout Randy Dagenais, appeared December 8 on the Yorkshire Post Web site.
After sealing a memorable double success at the end of
the 2008-09 Elite League season, defenceman Randy Dagenais is
coming back for what he hopes will be further success with
Sheffield Steelers.
It's been a few weeks since I last wrote and a lot has happened
since then. The team is doing considerably better compared to a
month or so ago, but the last month-and-a-half has been a true
emotional rollercoaster both on and off the ice for many different
reasons.
About four weeks ago, after a tough two-loss weekend, the team had
reached a new low. Something had to happen to shake things up and
to make a very long story short, management made the decision to
bring in Joe Dustin and to let me go. I was devastated when I was
informed of their decision. Although we had all known changes were
coming, I had always hoped I wouldn't be the one to go. The hardest
part for me was the realization that I might never play another
hockey game again. Every pro athlete's biggest fear is being forced
out of the sport they love. Needless to say, I was quite upset.
I made phone calls throughout the day to try to find another place
to play. Eventually I heard that Dustin had suffered a knee injury
and that the move had fallen through. Upon hearing this I
immediately texted Matty and told him that I would play if he
needed me.
