SCHENECTADY -- Union is poised to execute the biggest turnaround in the ECAC Hockey League with a strong finish in its final four regular-season games, an accomplishment achieved at least in part due to an improved discipline and reduced penalty minutes.
The Dutchmen, who finished last in the standings in 2007 and were picked to repeat in 12th place in preseason polls, could finish as high as first and no worse than eighth when the season ends in two weeks. The task begins tonight against first-place Clarkson.
"Right now we look at it like our fate's in our own hands," said junior defenseman Lane Caffaro, who set an all-time record for penalty minutes (101) as a freshman, but has shaved his penalty box time all the way down to 29 minutes in 27 games this season. "If we go out the way we should in these last four games, we'll reach our goal of finishing in the top four. It's a great challenge."
