Gillies Suffers Injury, Sidelined Until January

The following article featuring former Union standout Nathan Gillies appeared in the October 15 issue of the Yorkshire Post.

Sheffield Steelers head coach David Matsos has confirmed that former Union forward Nathan Gillies wil be sidelined for between 6 and 8 weeks after Gillies sustained an elbow injury in last week's 5-2 Challenge Cup defeat at Belfast Giants.

After seeing specialists this week, it was confirmed he had snapped a tendon, although surgery has been ruled out for now.

The news is a huge blow for Matsos, who kept faith with the 27-year-old Canadian despite him having a difficult start to the season.

The injury could not have come at a worse time for Gillies, who a week after getting off the mark with three assists, scored his first goal for the Steelers in Belfast.

Matsos has already started talks with two possible replacements for Gillies, but Saturday's home game against Cardiff Devils will come too soon for any new arrival.
