Union Announces Year-End Awards
SCOTIA, N.Y. -- The Union College men's hockey team celebrated
the 2007-08 season with the Garnet Blades Hockey Banquet at the
Glen Sanders Mansion Sunday evening. Adam Presizniuk (Calgary,
Alb.) was voted the team's most valuable player and named the
rookie of the year.
Presizniuk led the team in points and was an ECAC Hockey All-Rookie
Team selection. He played in all 35 games and was named the ECAC
Hockey Rookie of the Week on February 4. The winger recorded only
six penalty minutes all season and earned a spot on the ECAC Hockey
Weekly Honor Roll four times.
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, N.J.) received the Seventh Player Award,
co-sponsored by das Design and Lee's Trophies. The Seventh Player
Award is given to the player, as voted by fans, to be an individual
who, with extra effort and skill, consistently creates excitement
and aggressive play, resulting in a team advantage.
Cook was also named the recipient of the Charles N. Morrison Award.
The award is an endowed scholarship that was created from the gifts
of friends in the memory of Charles N. Morrison, Union's head
hockey coach from 1978 to 1988. It is given annually to a student
who participates in extracurricular activities while demonstrating
academic interest and achievement.
Junior Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, N.J.) earned the Thomas VanArden
Dukeheart Award, given to the player with the highest grade point
average on the team. Potts, who was the Dukeheart Award recipient
in 2005, is the first engineering major to be a two-time recipient
since Bill Snow '88. Potts was an ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team
selection and a nominee for the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the
Year Award.
Junior Mike Harr (Norwood, Mass.) was named the team's most
improved player. Harr played in 34 games this season with a goal
and five assists, and netted a goal and an assist against
Nebraska-Omaha on December 14.
Freshman Andrew Buote (Grande Prairie, Alb.) earned the Scott
Richardson '86 Unsung Hero Award. Buote appeared in 32 games, and
his two goals on the season were both game-winners. He was also a
key member of the penalty kill. The award was named in honor of
Richardson on November 3, in honor of the four-year letterwinner
who passed away last summer. According to those who knew him,
Richardson exemplified the true meaning of an unsung hero.
Senior assistant captains Michael Beynon (Nepean, Ont.) and Sam
Bowles (Davidsonville, Md.) were named recipients of the Coaches'
Award. They were later recognized as part of the five-member senior
class along with Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, Ohio), Torren Delforte
(Shortsville, N.Y.) and Justin Mrazek (Regina, Sask.), for their
four years of dedication to the team.
