Being a good hockey goalie takes as much mental strength as it does physical ability. A goalie must overcome giving up a bad goal or taking the blame for a loss. He has to block out the endless chants from opposing fans, and do it all while keeping a watchful eye on the game in front of them.

“You have to be sharp all the time,” St. Lawrence University goalie Matt Weninger said. “There are so many little things that it takes. The Division I level can expose a lot of kids.”

When St. Lawrence associate head coach Mike Hurlbut and then-associate head coach Bob Prier first saw Weninger, they were drawn to his physical abilities. He had quick reflexes, fast feet, took the proper angles and seemed to always play well. They had no idea of his mental strength.
