Bogosian, K. Flanagan Named Saints MVPs
Senior captain Aaron Bogosian and sophomore forward Kyle Flanagan shared the Dr. Stuart A. Winning Most Valuable Player Award to highlight the 2011 Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey Recognition Banquet at The Club in Canton on Sunday night.
Bogosian, currently playing for Springfield in the American Hockey League, established career highs for goals, assists and points as a senior with 14 goals, 14 assists and 28 points in 35 games. He netted three game winning goals and was in on five special teams goals, including two shorthanded. Flanagan had 12 goals and 23 assists in 39 games for 35 points as a sophomore and scored seven power play goals and two game winners. He was among the ECAC leaders in scoring, finishing 11th overall and was tied for ninth in power play points.
Additionally, Flanagan was named as one of two captains for the Saints next season, joining senior Jake Drewiske, who was an assistant captain this year. Junior George Hughes will be the assistant captain for the Saints next season. Kyle Flanagan becomes just the second Canton native in program history to wear the "C" as captain, joining Greg Carvel, who was captain in 1992-93. Kyle's brother Sean was an assistant captain this past season and his uncle Paul, former Saint men's assistant and women's head coach and now the head women's coach at Syracuse, was an assistant captain in 1979-80.
Bogosian and senior captain Jared Keller were named the co-winners of the Brian "Jinx" Doyle Memorial Award for leadership and outstanding contributions to the program and Keller, who battled concussions and other injuries through his final two seasons of intercollegiate play, was awarded the Terry Slater Perseverance Award, sharing that hardware with Sean Flanagan, who returned to action this year after missing the entire 2009-10 season after off-season surgery. Keller was also named the Dr. James Street Seventh Player Award winner as selected by the Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey.
Freshman wing Greg Carey, who led the ECAC overall with 23 goals in his first collegiate season, was a near-unanimous choice as the winner of the Mike Pelletier-Richie Stewart Rookie of the Year Award. A member of the ECAC All Rookie Team, Carey's goal total is the second highest for a Saint freshman in program history, eclipsed only by Neale Langill's 28 in the 1951-52 season. Carey, who scored 40 points in 40 games, was the first freshman to lead St. Lawrence in scoring since Paul Castron in 1981-82.
Hughes, who scored 21 points in 40 games in his second collegiate season as a defenseman was named the winner of the Pete McGeough Award as the outstanding Saint defenseman. He joined Daniel Laperriere (1990) and Dale Clarke (1998) as the only sophomore winners of that award.
Senior defenseman Matt Raley, who was the St. Lawrence nominee for ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year, was the winner of the Brian McFarlane Award which acknowledges hockey ability and outstanding performance in the classroom,. Raley's younger brother Pat, who emerged as a regular defenseman for the Saints in his rookie season and senior Nick Pitsikoulis, who established career highs in goals with 11 and points with 17 were the co-recipients of the Paul. J. Flanagan Most Improved Player Award.
Senior defenseman Bob Torney, a four-year member of the team who had a goal and an assist in 38 career appearances was named the winner of the Bernie McKinnon Coaches Award for his contributions to the Saint program during his career.
