INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League (CHL) announced Friday that former St. Lawrence standout Simon Watson has retired as a player and accepted the position of Assistant Director of Hockey Operations with the Mavericks.
"This is a big day for the Mavericks," said President and General Manager Brent Thiessen. "We are thrilled for Simon Watson to be named the Assistant Director of Hockey Operations, and although he has retired as a player, we are excited he will be a member of this team for the long term."
Watson, an original member of the Mavericks, played the previous two seasons with the Mavericks and closed out his five-year playing career in the CHL with 95 goals and 125 assists in 298 games. He joins the Mavericks hockey operations department where he will assist head coach Scott Hillman on the day-to-day tasks of the team as well as be involved in the youth hockey programs.
"Simon has had an outstanding career in the CHL and we could not be more honored to have such a great person join our hockey ops staff," said Hillman. "His incredible commitment to this community and our franchise over the past two years, and his passion for the game of hockey made this an easy decision for our organization."
