Child, Torney have Vermont Roots

The following article featuring St. Lawrence defensemen Pete Child and Bobby Torney appeared in the December 10 issue of the Burlington Free Press.

Shortly after 7 o’clock Saturday evening, two St. Lawrence University defensemen with strong Green Mountain heritages will appear on the Gutterson Fieldhouse ice against the University of Vermont.

Each has been here many times before; in a sense, both grew up at The Gut, where their fathers skated once for the Catamounts. One attended his first UVM game when he was four days old, and the two life-long buddies cheered on Vermont for years.

So, too, have their parents. Not tonight. Not when Shelburne natives Peter Child and Bobby Torney, Nos. 4 and 55, respectively, in the Saints’ traditional red-and-white uniforms, work to contain Catamount forwards who care nothing of the challenged allegiances facing Ted and Dina Child or Bob and Sally Torney, all UVM alumni.
