INCH A to Z: Jeff Caister

The following article featuring St. Lawrence defenseman Jeff Caister appeared August 5 on the InsideCollegeHockey.com Web site as part College Hockey A to Z.

You can't learn how to spell before you've mastered your A-B-Cs. Turns out that's the best way to preview the college hockey season as well. For the sixth year in a row we present Inside College Hockey A to Z, an alphabetical look at a player you need to know from all 58 colleges in Division I.

Jeff Caister and Joe Cannata have made believers of people at St. Lawrence and Merrimack, respectively. It's time the rest of college hockey take notice, as Caister assumes a bigger role on a revamped Saints blue line and Cannata returns to the Warriors a year older and wiser.

Key Statistics: Caister has only missed one game in his three-year college career and that came in only the second game of the season last year when the Saints were still trying to figure out what they had in terms of personnel. He had two goals and seven assists for the Saints and played in 37 of 38 games.

What He Does: Although he had just nine points last year, he wasn't counted on to be a big scorer among St. Lawrence blueliners with the likes of Matt Generous, Zach Miskovic and Jared Ross back on the blueline. But he still played 20 minutes a night and played the point on SLU's top power-play unit. He showed that he can contribute to the offense by recording an impressive 47 points through his first two college seasons, which were spent at Wayne State. That included a 3 goal, 28 assist campaign as a sophomore for the Warriors in the 2007-08 year that helped get him noticed as Wayne State's second-leading scorer and sent on his way to Canton, N.Y. to continue his college playing career.
