Randy Sexton laughs when reminded that skeptics suggested he would
never, ever, be back in NHL management when he was fired as Ottawa
Senators president, general manager and chief executive officer in
1995.
"Ever is a long time," Sexton said in a telephone interview from
Finland on Friday, only hours after he was named general manager of
the Florida Panthers, who opened the season with a 4-3 shootout win
over Chicago in Helsinki. "If you believe in yourself, if you're
prepared to work, more often than not you'll get a chance. I'm very
fortunate that Jacques (Martin) gave me the opportunity to get back
into management (two years ago)."
In what now seems like a different era, Sexton was an original
founding member of the Senators, along with former owner Bruce
Firestone and current Senators president Cyril Leeder. Sexton, a
Brockville native, was on top of all aspects of the Senators
organization and became a lightning rod for criticism when the club
struggled early.
