When the hockey season began, it looked as if goalkeeper Mike McKenna was going to spend his third year in the ECHL playing for the Las Vegas Wranglers.
Fate intervened when the Portland Pirates suffered a goalie shortage in the first month of the season, and McKenna got another chance to show he belonged in the American Hockey League.
"I was one week in Las Vegas, and my agent called: 'They want you in Portland tomorrow night. What do you think?'" McKenna said. "I had a contract offer. I'm not passing it up. Next thing you know I was on a plane coming here."
Just like that, McKenna's fortunes changed.
