
McBride Recognized as Saints' Top Player
CANTON, N.Y. -- Junior Brock McBride was named Most Valuable Player and senior goaltender Justin Pesony became the first two-time winner of the Brian "Jinx" Doyle Memorial Award as the 2007-08 St. Lawrence University men's hockey team was feted at the annual Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey banquet Saturday night.
McBride, who led the Saints in scoring with 12 goals and 22 assists for 34 points, is the first junior to win the Dr. Stuart P. Winning MVP Award since TJ Trevelyan in 2005 and has a chance to join Trevelyan as a two-time winner of the award.
Pesony, who was the first junior to win the Doyle Award for leadership, character and athletic ability, becomes the first two-time winner of that award and is just the second goaltender to win the award in its 45-year history. The Saint senior goalie also won the Brian McFarlane Award for athletic and academic accomplishment for the second straight year.
John Hallas, a graduate student who emerged as the starting goalie for the Saints in the playoffs after appearing in just six games prior to this season, was named the winner of the Most Improved Player Award. Hallas played in 15 games this season and compiled a 2.59 goals against average with a .910 save percentage and a 6-7-1 record.
Zach Miskovic, a junior who was a third team All ECAC Hockey selection and the leading defensive scorer for the Saints was named the Peter McGeough Award winner as the outstanding defenseman. Miskovic scored eight goals and had 12 assists for 20 points in addition to outstanding play in the defensive end and finished among the leaders in defensive scoring overall in the league.
Jordan Hack, a senior who had seven goals and eight assists in 35 games, was named the winner of the Coaches Award while classmate Charlie Giffin, who had eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 37 games was selected as the Friends' Seventh Player Award winner.
Pat Muir, a graduate student who played in 12 games this season, scoring his first collegiate goal on the final weekend of the regular season, was selected as the winner of the Terry Slater Perseverance Award.
Freshman Aaron Bogosian, who had five goals and seven assists for 12 points and played both forward and defense in his rookie season was named the Saint Rookie of the Year.
The Saints also announced their captains for 2008-09 with Jared Ross and Shawn Fensel returning as team captains. Ross and Fensel become the first players to be two-time captains since Josh Anderson in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and the seventh and eighth players who have worn the "C" of captain in two consecutive years.
