TROY — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is on its
playoff run. Five consecutive victories -- a fete RPI hadn't
accomplished in ECAC Hockey league play in nine years -- has the
Engineers on the brink of nailing down fourth place in the
league.
If they keep winning, the Engineers could finish third, even
higher with a slide by Union and if Yale continues to lose.
Rensselaer has not finished among the top four in the ECACH
standings since the 2001-02 season and the league was so balanced
that season, the Engineers did so with a 10-9-3 record. At 9-5-0
currently, and with five dates remaining against teams with losing
records among their remaining eight games, the Engineers have an
excellent chance to better those marks. The top four finishers, of
course, do not have to be bothered with their preliminary round of
the playoffs, when the 5-12 finishers knock off one
another.
