Higgs Grateful for Fast, Professional Medical Response
TROY — It wouldn’t be totally inaccurate to say that
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute freshman center Brock Higgs is
lucky to be alive today. The skate-blade cut he incurred six days
ago missed all major arteries and veins but he did suffer a very
serious wound last Thursday night. And, one-inch higher, the
Kingston, Ont. native could have been in grave danger. He could
have died.
As it was, the quick action of teammate Alex Angers-Goulet,
who’ll attend medical school in two years, RPI trainer Chris
Thompson, Huntsville, Ala. doctor Brenda Peak and nurse
practitioner Gary Lawson, kept the situation from being worse.
Skating at center ice, Higgs was cut by teammate Chase
Polacek’s skate after Polacek was upended by
Alabama-Huntsville winger Keenan Desmet, who was called for
tripping (erroneously recorded as hooking) on the play at 7:59 of
the second period.
