MacDonald Stays with Providence
The Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL) announced that right wing Kirk MacDonald, a former Rensselaer standout, has re-signed with the team for the 2010-11 season.
In 2009-10, MacDonald set AHL career-highs in games (64), goals (14), assists (8), points (22) and penalty minutes (45). He finished tied for fourth on P-Bruins in goals. MacDonald scored his 100th professional goal on January 15 at Bridgeport.
MacDonald enjoyed a stellar four-season and five-year career at RPI. After leading RPI in goals (16) and points (36) -- and being selected the team's MVP -- in his junior season (2004-05), MacDonald was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which resulted in four surgeries, a series of chemotherapy treatments, and a significant loss of weight that kept him out of action the following year. However, in 2006-07, MacDonald not only returned for his senior season, but he once again led the team in goals (12) and tied for the team lead in points (27). For his efforts, MacDonald, who served as the team captain that season, was voted as RPI's Most Inspirational Player. That year, MacDonald was also recognized by the Rensselaer Alumni Association with their Community Service Award and was a finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is awarded to college hockey's finest citizen.
