RPI to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of NCAA Title
TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
men’s hockey team welcomes back many of the players and staff
of the 1985 NCAA Championship Team – as well as other former
member of the program – on February 5-6 as part of
Men’s Hockey Alumni Weekend. There are numerous events
planned, many of which are centered on the Engineers capturing
their second national championship 25 years ago.
The first program of the weekend is the ‘Legends of
’85’ on Friday afternoon, February 5, at 4pm in the
Houston Field House. The event, which is free and open to the
public, is an interactive discussion as four members of the 1985
team – Mike Sadeghpour, Mike Dark, Ken Hammond, and George
Servinis – share tales of their winning season.
The program features video footage and discussion of the path
leading to the national championship. Among the others from the
title-winning team expected to be on hand are Terry Butryn, Mark
Jooris, Mike Poisson and Daren Puppa. The first 75 fans in
attendance receive a DVD of the 1985 NCAA Championship game –
a 2-1 victory over Providence College.
The present-day RPI team hosts ECAC Hockey foe St. Lawrence that
night at 7pm.
The celebration of Alumni Weekend continues with the Alumni Hockey
Game on February 6 at 11am in the Houston Field House, featuring
members of the 1985 team as well as other alumni. The game is also
free and open to the public.
During that evening’s varsity game – RPI against
Clarkson beginning at 7pm – there will be a raffle of replica
1985 jerseys for fans to win. Raffle tickets can be purchased at
the game with the fans selecting which player’s jersey, which
features a name and number, they choose to win.
Following a video presentation during the first intermission, the
members of the 1985 National Championship team in attendance
– including head coach Mike Addesa, who is expected –
will be introduced. All returning hockey alumni will then be
introduced during the second intermission.
Following the game the members of the 1985 team will participate
in a meet-and-greet and autograph session with the fans.
