TROY -- With 220 games in juniors and 48 in collegiate play under his belt, RPI defenseman Nick Bailen could hardly be called an overnight success story. He just might, however, be the most experienced rookie in ECAC Hockey this season.
Bailen, who will turn 21 on Dec. 12, is actually a sophomore in terms of Engineers eligibility because he played one season at Bowling Green in the CCHA in 2008-09 before deciding to return to the Indiana Ice of the USHL to complete a distinguished junior hockey career dating back to 2005.
A two-time captain and all-star, Bailen holds the Ice record for career games and points by a defenseman. He also scored 16 points in 37 games as a freshman at Bowling Green, which happens to be one of the four teams competing in the 60th annual RPI Holiday beginning Friday at Houston Field House.
