Opportunity for Lee

Among many candidates in a deep group of talented forwards at Rensselaer, it might come as a bit of a surprise to find out who has taken one of the coveted spots in the lineup at this early stage in the season. Proven point producers and talented offensive senior standouts Tyler Helfrich and Chase Polacek lead the Engineers up front. That left one more spot on the wing, and the chosen player to fill it last weekend was a sophomore who recorded just three points (all assists) in 28 games as a freshman.
C.J. Lee wasn’t fazed. He fit in quite well, and in two games on the wing of RPI’s top line, he has already doubled his career point total. Lee assisted on Polacek’s game-tying goal Friday in a 2-2 draw at Northeastern, and then popped his first career goal and had an assist in the Engineers’ 3-0 home victory over Bentley.
Lee has the right mix of attributes to help that line be successful. He has great speed and brings a lot of energy to the trio. There’s a toughness aspect as well. He won’t be able to fight in college hockey, but is a no-nonsense guy that can stand up for his teammates.
