OTTAWA — For more than a year, Brian Pothier’s life had literally spun out of control.

On the receiving end of a legal but devastating check from Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic in January 2008, Pothier’s career appeared over.

The Washington Capitals defenceman was immediately sidelined with a severe concussion and he didn’t dare even put on skates for 11 months. At times, the vertigo became so severe, he couldn’t push his two boys, Jake and Luke, on a swing because he became too nauseous.
