TROY — Writing a recap of Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute’s hockey season two weeks ago — and this
writer had started it — would have been much more dreadful,
much less positive than it is now.
Then the Engineers came within one goal, one lucky break, one huge
save by Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens, about one about 10 inches in
the closing seconds, of at least going into overtime with a chance
to play in ECAC Hockey’s Championship Weekend at the Times
Union Center.
Oh, the Engineers still lost a school-record 27 games and finished
11th in a 12-team league. They did score one or zero goal in 11 of
their first 17 games and in their 39 games overall, scored two or
fewer goals 26 times – two-thirds of their games.
