RALEIGH, N.C. -– Loyalty is an important trait to Matt
Murley. He proved it a decade ago when he stayed in his hometown of
Troy to play hockey at RPI, and he appreciates the fact that his
current employer, the Carolina Hurricanes, has that reputation.
So it was an easy decision 10 days ago when the 'Canes offered him
a contract. He wishes he had done it a year sooner.
"I was probably two or three minutes away from signing here (last
season)," said Murley, who took a one-year deal with the Phoenix
Coyotes. "Phoenix called me, and my agent and a couple of other
people thought that was probably my best opportunity to get back to
the NHL. It didn't really work out the way I was hoping. My heart
wanted me to sign here, so this year, when it came about, there was
no question I wanted to come here."
