Angers-Goulet Named Engineers' Captain

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) head coach Seth Appert has announced the captains of the 2008-09 men's hockey team and they are seniors Matt Angers-Goulet and Seth Klerer and junior Peter Merth. Angers-Goulet will wear the captain's ‘C' while Klerer and Merth will be assistant captains.

A forward from St. Augustin, Que., Angers-Goulet has played 106 career games, tallying 22 goals and 19 assists for 41 points. He tallied eight goals and six assists in 37 games a season ago, when he recorded a team-best two game-winning goals. A two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic selection, Angers-Goulet is an industrial and management engineering major who played for the Notre Dame Hounds prior to attending Rensselaer.

Klerer, a forward who hails from Thornhill, Ont., has played in 105 career games, earning 30 points on 14 goals and 16 assists. Also a two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic honoree, his most productive season offensively came as a sophomore when he scored nine goals with 12 assists for 21 points while playing in all 36 games. Klerer, a management major, played three years for the North York Rangers before landing in Troy.

A defenseman from New Westminster, B.C., Merth has suited up in every game in his first two years. He has three goals and 20 assists for 23 points in 74 contests. He was the recipient of the team's Best Defensive Player Award in both seasons and the program's Top Freshman Award winner in 2006-07. An ECAC Hockey All-Academic selection, he is an environmental science major who played junior hockey for the Burnaby Express.

Rensselaer will conduct its Annual Red/White Scrimmage this evening, October 4, beginning at 5pm at the Houston Field House. Following the scrimmage, which marks the collegiate debuts of the team's eight freshmen, both the men's and women's teams will take part in the Annual Skate with the Engineers.

The scrimmage and the skate, which begins at approximately 7:15pm, are free and open to the public. The skate-a-long will run until about 8:45pm. All those interested in participating are required to bring their own skates.

The men's team opens the 2008-09 season next Saturday, October 11, against the University of Vermont in Quebec City (4pm). RPI makes its home debut the following evening when it hosts the USA Under-18 National Development Team at 5pm at the Houston Field House.

Rensselaer finished the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 11-23-4.
