The Troy Record
ALBANY - Seth Appert prefers to have one starting goaltender. He
is a patient man, however, and the second-year Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute head coach and former Ferris State netminder
is fine with the fact that neither senior Jordan Alford nor junior
Mathias Lange has been able to nail down the No. 1 role.
There's a specific reason neither has done so; each has played
splendidly thus far, Alford in four games (three shutouts), Lange
in three (one near shutout). Last season, when RPI won only 10 of
36 games (10-18-8), the team was beset with poor defensive play;
young defensemen were out of position, backchecking was sporadic;
players stopped blocking shots; odd-man rushes
through the neutral zone were permitted with regularity. All that
notwithstanding, both Alford and Lange had terrible seasons.
