STOCKTON - The fans at Stockton Arena missed their first chance to celebrate James Bates' hat trick. But he gave them another opportunity at the end of his record-breaking night for the Thunder.

Bates set a franchise mark with four goals and had an assist as Stockton beat the Utah Grizzlies 6-4 in front of 5,907 fans. Bates' third goal was the winner 41 seconds into the third period, and it's hockey tradition for fans to throw hats on to the ice after a member of the home team gets a hat trick, but his name wasn't announced as the scorer until after play resumed.

The crowd got a second chance to throw their hats when Bates scored an empty netter with 46 seconds left, prompting Thunder coach Matt Thomas to come up with a new name.
