CROMWELL -- Being scratched from your first five pro games while healthy might seem downright depressing, but it proved quite a blessing for Brandon Wong.

After completing a stellar career at Quinnipiac University in Hamden in March, Wong signed an amateur tryout contract with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapid Griffins. But he didn’t make his pro debut until the Griffins reached Abbotsford, British Columbia, not far from where Wong grew up in Surrey and Victoria.

“All my family and friends came to see my first pro game, and I got my first pro point on a goal by Brad May,” Wong recalled with a wide smile.
