Riga Participates in Select-17 Development Camp
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Quinnipiac University men’s
assistant ice hockey coach Bill Riga recently served as a coach at
the USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp that was held from
July 7-13 at the ESL Sports Centre in Rochester, N.Y. The goal of
the camp is to serve as a try-out for the 2009 U.S. Under-18 Select
Team that will compete at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial from Aug.
11-15, in Piestany, Slovakia.
“It’s great to be part of USA Hockey and work with
some of the best under-18 players in the country,” Riga said.
“The opportunity to work with great coaches from throughout
the college and junior hockey ranks was an invaluable
experience.”
Riga served as co-head coach with University of
Nebraska-Omaha’s Nick Fohr. Riga’s responsibilities
included designing and implementing practice plans, coaching one of
the eight teams in the festival in a round-robin format tournament.
Riga also coordinated team-building activities as well as
individual skill instruction.
Those players which Riga instructed individually that were named
to the were include goalie Cody Campbell, defensemen Brandon
Archibald and Scott Mayfield, as well as forwards Nick Bjugstad,
Colten St. Clair, and Charlie Coyle.
Riga will be beginning his second year with the Quinnipiac
University men’s ice hockey staff. Last season, the Bobcats
finished the year at 18-18-3 overall while hosting an ECAC Hockey
Tournament First Round series for the fourth consecutive season.
Riga is heavily involved in the Bobcats’ recruiting efforts
as well as the day-to-day operation of the team.
