Quinnipiac Names Wong and Atkinson Assistant Captains
HAMDEN, Conn. -- Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey head
coach Rand Pecknold has announced that seniors Brandon Wong
(Victoria, B.C.) and Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) have been named
assistant captains for the 2009-10 season. Last year, at the
Bobcats' annual banquet, Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) was
voted the team's captain unanimously. Wong was voted by the team as
an assistant captain prior to Quinnipiac's two-game series at Ohio
State on Oct. 7-8, while Atkinson was voted to wear the "A" this
past week.
Wong currently leads Quinnipiac and ECAC Hockey with six points on
two goals and a team-best four assists. Against Ohio State, Wong
became the ninth player in Quinnipiac's Division I history and 16th
all-time to reach the 50-goal mark for his career. Through
Quinnipiac's first three games (3-0-0), Wong has had a hand in six
of the Bobcats' 10 goals for the year. For his career, Wong has
scored 51 goals while assisting on 57 for 108 points. He also
became just the fourth player in Quinnipiac's Division I history to
reach the 100-point mark as a junior.
Atkinson currently has one goal this coming, coming against Ohio
State in the Bobcats 3-1 win on Oct. 8 to complete the two-game
sweep of the Buckeyes. For his career, Atkinson has totaled 14
goals and 22 assists for 36 points in 98 games played. Last season,
Atkinson reached career-highs in assists (12) and points (16).
Quinnipiac returns to action this weekend when it heads to Moon
Township, Pa. to take on Robert Morris University in a two-game,
non-conference series on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31,
with both games set for a 7 p.m. start.
