The following article appeared January 5 on the Quinnipiac Web site.

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Quinnipiac University will host National Hockey League pioneer Willie O’Ree on Friday, January 9 when it plays Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 7 p.m.

On January 18, 1958 O’Ree became the first black person to play in the NHL while skating for the Boston Bruins against the Montreal Canadiens. The historic event later paved the way for players of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds at all levels of the sport. O’Ree is currently the NHL’s Director of Youth Development and ambassador for the Hockey Is For Everyone diversity program, a post he has held since January 1998.

As part of this special appearance at Quinnipiac, O’Ree will drop the ceremonial first puck prior to the game and sign autographs for fans during intermissions. He will also meet and talk to a group of local children who will be attending their first-ever hockey game.
