HAMDEN — OK, so Rand Pecknold was a little scary to his
year-old daughter, Cecilia, Saturday. But she’ll come
around.
Pecknold, along with his entire Quinnipiac hockey team and select
members of the university community, had their heads shaved as part
of a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fund-raiser Saturday that
netted in excess of $25,000 — more than 2 1/2 times the
original goal and five times greater than Pecknold ever suspected
when he first signed on to raise money to combat children’s
cancer.
We won’t be so cold as to say that the looks of some of the
hockey players were truly improved by the buzz cut — though
it is so — but to a man, they would tell you that the
sacrifice of a head of hair was miniscule compared to the cause.
Little Brent McCreesh, the 6-year-old Southport neighbor of
Pecknold, was the inspiration behind the “Blades and
Shaves” fund-raising event that took place outside the TD
Banknorth Sports Center Saturday, and he recently passed his third
year in remission of neuroblastoma, a rare cancer of the nervous
system that is typically found in young children.
