EDMONTON — Most college free-agents signed to pro contracts in the springtime are ready to leave academia for a hockey education, but not Taylor Fedun.

He had to finish up his thesis at Princeton University. His project? “We built a hovercraft,” said the Edmonton Oilers’ free-agent pickup.

The mechanical engineering student who played his minor hockey with the South Side Athletic Club could probably find a job in the real world with little trouble graduating from one of the elite Ivy League schools. But Fedun, who played at Princeton for Edmontonian Guy Gadowsky who just left for a rosy new job with Penn State (Buffalo owner Terry Pegula donated $88 million for a new rink), wants to be on an NHL blue-line. Engineering can wait, thank you.
