On Nov. 28, freshman forward Marc Hagel of the men’s hockey
team scored twice against then-No. 4 Northeastern. On Friday
evening, the Tigers battle Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA West
Regional.
For the second straight year and the third time in Princeton
history, the men’s hockey team has made it to the NCAA
Tournament. The No. 10 Tigers (22-11-1 overall, 14-8-0 ECAC Hockey)
will take on No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth (21-12-8) at
Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis tonight at 9 p.m. Thanks to last
weekend’s 2-2 tie against St. Lawrence in the consolation
game of the ECAC tournament, Princeton earned the No. 3 seed in the
West Regional, which also features No. 1 seed Denver (23-11-5) and
No. 4 seed Miami University (20-12-5).
Though UMD’s record and results are far from impressive, it
is one of the hottest teams in the country right now. The
second-seeded Bulldogs finished the regular season ranked seventh
in the highly competitive Western Collegiate Hockey Association,
but they defeated No. 19 Minnesota 2-1, No. 7 North Dakota 3-0 and
Denver 4-0 in succession to become the first team in history to win
three straight times at the WCHA final. To reach the tournament,
the Bulldogs first swept Colorado College in a best-of-three
series.
